Invitation from Tulsa Chapter President:

2010-2011 TEEOCA year is already starting off with a splash for our HR Professionals. One of the hottest topics in employment law is the topic for our first program of the year – Family Responsibility Discrimination. Rachel Crawford will be getting us up to date on what we need to know about this hot topic.

For the past year TEEOCA has focused on content rich employment law issues and we plan on continuing to provide programs that will keep our members and guests up to date on issues that face the workplace. As I like to say “TEEOCA is your resource for employment law issues”. All our programs will be HRCI credit approved and we will provide handouts and materials posted to our website.

If you are interested in serving as an officer, please let us know. Our elections will be held at our first meeting and we will be sending out information on those who have agreed to serve our association. Your feedback on programs and the association is much appreciated.

This is the beginning of our program year and membership is based on September to May programs. We are working to get the membership dues and prepaids current so thanks for working with us. If you have not joined, please consider joining for our first meeting of the year in Sept. We are doing our best to bring content and value to our membership.

Sign up today for the program and complete a membership application on line or at the meeting.

Looking forward to another great year!

Blessings,

Travis Jones
President of TEEOCA 2010-2011

Kirk Turner’s Topic: “Family Responsibilities Discrimination: Don’t Get Caught Off Guard” When to conduct an investigation

Family Responsibilities Discrimination is the new en vogue employment claim. Lawsuits filed by caregivers have increased almost 400% over the past decade as a result, and verdicts and settlements in family responsibilities discrimination cases average over $500,000. Employers of all sizes – from small start-up companies to large multi-national corporations – are being sued by employees who are pregnant, or who care for young children, sick spouses or parents, or aging parents. Employers need to be aware of the liability and potential costs associated with family responsibilities discrimination.

Rachel B. Crawford, an attorney with the law firm of Newton, O’Connor, Turner & Ketchum, P.C., will provide important information about current trends in family responsibilities discrimination, factual patterns of which employers need to be aware, the most common causes of action and what employers need to know to avoid claims of family responsibilities discrimination.

TEEOCA is finishing the program year strong with Mr. Kirk Turner. For the past 9 months, we have had attorney’s speak on a variety of topics and the need for documentation and internal investigations has been touched on consistently. This month’s luncheon topic is titled "Keys to an Internal Investigation". We have asked Kirk to present a workshop for our members and guests after the luncheon that will be very practical for the workplace and tie up the year with afternoon workshop. The program title is "Biggest Mistakes Managers Make and How to Avoid Them". If you have ever been to one of Kirk’s programs – you know it will be a full value packed session and one that you will want to bring some of your managers too. His handouts will be well worth the $60 for this program and will not be available except to those who attend. TEEOCA continues to help the HR professional to bring value to the table for their companies. You won’t want to miss this session and a great opportunity to bring others with you from your company. Our luncheon is regular price and the afternoon session is just $60 per person. A small price to pay for the prevention of a mistake that may cost you company $1,000’s. HRCI Credit for both the lunch & workshop.

We have moved the May program to the second Wednesday in the month since the Oklahoma SHRM conference is the first week in May. I would encourage you to consider attending this conference as it is packed full of great programs: www.okhrconference.com

March madness is upon us – everyone seems to be stretched to do more with less in the HR field. TEEOCA is the resource that keeps us sane, with outstanding programs on topics of interest to keep our feet grounded. Last month, our program was so powerful that many attendees were gathered around our speaker for a good while after the program asking questions. I am reminded again of what a blessing it is to have Employment Law Attorney’s as our guest speakers each month. The topics to complete our normal year at TEEOCA over the next three months are Slam Dunks, to play a little off the upcoming basketball playoffs. It will soon be baseball season and then we will call them Home Runs. Take a look, make your reservations and join us for great food, education and networking with other HR Professionals. We appreciate your attendance and participation.
If you have not joined TEEOCA, please consider joining and becoming active.
